Jason Carbone

Class of 2001

2001 graduate of South Windsor High School who starred on the Boys’ Basketball Team. Jason was Captain and All State his senior year, All Conference First Team junior and senior years and as a senior, he led the team to its first ever CCC-East Conference Title in twenty-one years averaging 22.2 points and ten rebounds per game. Jason led the CCC-East Conference and area in scoring with 511 points. He averaged 29.5 points and thirteen rebounds per game in the Class LL State tournament as the team advanced to the quarterfinals. Jason led the team in both scoring and rebounding both junior and senior years, was named the Doc Hurley Tournament “Most Outstanding Player” both junior and senior years and played in the CHSCA Class LL Senior All Star game. Jason left South Windsor High School as the Boys’ Basketball All Time Career three point field goal record holder and the third all-time leading scorer with 1109 points.

Jason received a B.A. in Sociology and Minor in Criminal Justice from Mount St. Mary’s University in 2005. Jason was recruited by College Basketball Hall of Fame Coach Jim Phelan and played four years of Division 1 college basketball. He ranks among the top 3-point shooters in school history and was recognized as the University’s “Athlete of the Week” his senior year. Jason received a M.A. in Criminal Justice form Boston University in 2008.

Jason has been a Manchester, Connecticut Police Officer since 2005 receiving numerous awards including the Medal of Valor and multiple Letters of Commendation. He has been a School Resource Officer (2017-present) and served in the Community Policing Unit (2012-16). Jason is also a Licensed Connecticut Realtor and is owner of Carbone Properties, LLC, a real estate investment company (2010-present). Jason resides in South Windsor with his wife, Sara.

Maura Danahy Schreier

Class of 1998

1998 graduate of South Windsor High School where she was an outstanding student athlete. Maura received All State recognition all four years (1994-98) in high school in three sports – Cross Country, Indoor Track and Outdoor Track. In Cross Country she was also All New England (1995-98), Class L Champion (1995), CCC East Conference Champion (1995-98) and Team Captain (1997-98). Maura was the 3200 meter State Open Champion in Indoor Track (1995) and Outdoor Track (1996).

She was on the Honor Roll every year, a member of the National Honor Society, participated in Student Government and was a Choir Senior Officer. She graduated in the top 17% of her class in 1998.

Maura graduated from Connecticut College in 2002 where she was a Cross Country All American (1999-2001) and Captain (two years), Indoor Track All American in the 5000 (fifth place finish in 2001) and Outdoor Track All American in the 10,000 (third place finish in 2002). In 2002, she was voted the Connecticut Athlete of the Year by the Connecticut Sports Writers Alliance. At graduation she was the female recipient of the Anita DeFrantz award given annually to a male and female member of the graduating class whose athletic ability, leadership and sportsmanship best exemplify the qualities of Olympic Medalist Anita DeFrantz, class of 1974.

Maura received a graduate degree from Southern Connecticut State University in 2013. Her employment includes Elementary Teacher in Hartford and New Haven, Connecticut and Oakland, California; Special Education Teacher at Bassick High School and Park City Magnet Elementary School in Bridgeport, Connecticut (2013-2018) and is currently the Life Skills Special Education Teacher at Windsor Locks High School.

Maura founded the Unified Sports Program and was Head Coach at Park City Magnet School and served as Unified Sports Head Coach and Assistant Coach at Bassick High School (2013-16). She was also a Special Olympics Partner (2012-16).

Maura was a 2002 Olympic Trials Marathon Qualifier and in 2007 was voted into the Connecticut College Athletic Hall of Fame.

Maura is married to Josh Schreier who ran Cross Country with her at South Windsor High School.

Mark Duclos

Class of 1979

1979 graduate of South Windsor High School where he was All Conference in Football and Track. Mark graduated from American International College in 1983 and was a three year starter on the Football Team.

After sales positions with Suffield Savings Bank/Home Mortgage Corporation, Citibank and Culbro Land Resources, he was a Commercial Real Estate Broker at the Farley Company. In 1991, Mark co-founded Sentry Commercial, initially a brokerage and advisory firm that expanded to commercial real estate services including brokerage, advisory, property management and construction management services.

Mark serves in leadership roles as a member and President-Elect of SIOR (The Society of Industrial and Office Realtors), CRE (The Counselors of Real Estate) and is a member of the UConn Center for Real Estate Advisory Board.

Mark served as an Assistant Football Coach at South Windsor High School in 1983 and 1984 and as an Assistant Girls Lacrosse Coach at South Windsor High School and Somers High School. Mark was a youth coach including both Girls and Boys Travel Basketball Teams, South Windsor Girls Lacrosse and the Connecticut Lacrosse Foundation (United States Lacrosse) Select Team. Mark is presently the In-House Program Coordinator and Coach for South Windsor Girl’s Lacrosse.

Mark’s community service includes the Connecticut Lacrosse Foundation (United States Lacrosse) Grant Committee Chairperson and Board Member, the South Windsor Girls Lacrosse Program (Past President), and a member of the Board of Directors (and past President) of REFA (Real Estate Finance Association) of Hartford. Mark also serves on the University of Connecticut Center for Real Estate and Urban Economic Studies as a member of the Advisory Board.

Mark is married to Lisa and has a son Chris and daughter Allie who is a South Windsor High School Hall of Fame member.

Bonnie Hayes

Class of 1975

1975 graduate of South Windsor High School who attended daily dance classes including tap, jazz, ballet and acrobatics throughout high school. Bonnie also studied in New York City and Boston and was selected to demonstrate dance techniques with select instructors at major dance conventions. She completed her high school academic requirements in 3 ½ years to pursue her love of dance full time.

Upon graduation from high school, Bonnie auditioned and was selected for the cast of French Dressing at the former Chateau de Ville Dinner Theatre in East Windsor, Connecticut where she performed eight shows a week.

In 1975 Bonnie opened her own studio, The Bonnie Hayes School of Performing Arts at the Wapping Community House in South Windsor. As her business expanded she purchased a studio on Oakland Road in South Windsor where she has operated her business for forty-four years. Miss Bonnie as she is known by her students offers her students the latest techniques and brings in specialty dance instructors from across the United States. Her students have had opportunities to participate in dance conventions in New York City, Boston and Las Vegas. Miss Bonnie has been a guest judge at many dance competitions including the Dance Educators of America in Las Vegas.

Many of her students have utilized their dance skills on off Broadway shows, tours and scholarship pageants. Miss Bonnie has provided dance instruction through generations teaching children and nieces of former students.

Miss Bonnie donates to the South Windsor Rotary Auction and other community fundraisers including fundraising efforts for a seizure response dog for Malea Gerich-Grady.

Miss Bonnie is known as a teacher, mentor and friend to many. Bonnie resides in South Windsor.

Melissa Morgan-Hostetler

SWHS Administrator, Coach, and Teacher

Accomplished Girls’ Soccer Coach at South Windsor High School who compiled a record of 203 wins, 60 ties and 23 losses in sixteen years while winning nine conference championships. Also served as Ellington High School Girls’ Soccer Coach for two years. Melissa received recognition as Connecticut Coach of the Year by the Connecticut Girls’ Soccer Coaches Association, six time recipient of CCC-East Coach of the Year, Hugh S. Greer Distinguished Service Award – Central Connecticut Soccer Officials’ Association and the Keith Johnson Sportsmanship Award.

Melissa’s employment includes Associate Principal at South Windsor High School (2017-present), Assistant Principal at Stafford Middle School (2016-17), Sixth Grade Science and Social Studies Teacher/TEAM Mentor/District Professional Development and Evaluation Committee Member/SRBI Interventionist at Stafford Middle School (2012-16). She was a Third Grade Teacher at Crystal Lake School in Ellington (2011-12), Elementary Spanish Teacher-St. Thomas the Apostle School in West Hartford (2005-11), Tutor and previously a Fifth Grade Teacher at Philip R. Smith Elementary School in South Windsor.

Melissa is a 1988 graduate of Ellington High School where she was a four year letter winner in Soccer, Basketball and Softball. She was All Conference in all three sports and All State in Soccer and Softball and second team All State in Basketball. Melissa graduated from Drew University in 1992 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theatre/Spanish minor. She participated on the Soccer, Basketball and Softball Teams, was New Jersey All State, Captain of Soccer and Basketball Teams and received Senior Athlete of the Year Award. She received a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of New England in 2009. Certifications include Intermediate Administrative Certification from Sacred Heard University in 2016 and Elementary Education Certification from Central Connecticut State University in 1995.

Melissa has served as Director of the Ellington Recreation Department Soccer Camp (2015), Co-Owner and Facilitator for “Beyond the Game” Workshops (2014-16), Co-Owner and Director of Bobcat Soccer Academy Soccer Camp (2003-12) and Director of Somers Recreation Department Soccer Camp (2008-11). She was a subcommittee Chairperson for the CIAC Athletic Department evaluation of South Windsor High School, Curriculum Writer/Teacher at South Windsor High School, served on Connecticut Girls’ Soccer Coaches Association committees for All State, All New England, All American selections, CCC-East League Representative, Member of the South Windsor Little League Board and Coach, Member of Somers Soccer Association and Somers Youth Travel Soccer and Basketball Coach.

Melissa resides in Somers with her husband John and three sons.

Dennis Murphy

Class of 1964

1964 graduate of South Windsor High School where he played Varsity Basketball, Baseball and Soccer. Dennis was Basketball Captain and an All Star 1963-1964 and Baseball Captain and All Star 1962-64. In 1964, Dennis received the Hugh Greer Outstanding Athlete Award. In 1965, Dennis was the starting third baseman on the first South Windsor American Legion Baseball Team to win a zone title.

Dennis served four years in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. In 1967-68 he was stationed at the American Embassy in Saigon, Vietnam during the “Tet” Offensive and the attack on the American Embassy. He also served as a bodyguard for Ambassador Ellsworth Bunker at his residence and on a visit to Kathmandu, Nepal. In 1968-69 he was stationed at the American Embassy in Taipei, Taiwan and was promoted to Sergeant. He was a member of an all military All-Star Basketball Team which played national teams from Japan and China.

In the early 1970’s he coached South Windsor American Legion Baseball and South Windsor Senior League Baseball.

Dennis served twenty-four years with the Windsor Police Department for the period 1971-1995. He was a Crime Prevention Officer and received promotions to Detective and Sergeant serving as a Patrol Supervisor until he assumed the responsibilities of Detective Division Supervisor. Dennis received nine Police Merit Awards and one Department Citation. He received an award from MADD for outstanding contribution to eliminate drunk driving in 1991, served as a member of the Windsor Police Special Tactics and Rescue Team and as Union President for three years. Dennis initiated and coordinated the Windsor Police Golf Tournament for twelve years and raised approximately $30K for the Newington Children’s Hospital.

In 1988, Dennis served as a bodyguard for Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North during an event in East Windsor, Connecticut. From 1995 to 2009 Dennis was employed with The State’s Attorney’s Office - Manchester Superior Court as an investigator.

For the period 1986-89, Dennis served as an Eastern Board Baseball Umpire for high school and American Legion games.

Dennis resides in South Windsor with his wife Deborah and has a daughter Molly.

James W. Snow, Jr.*

Ellsworth Class of 1949

Ellsworth Memorial High School graduate class of 1949. Jim was a member of the Varsity Soccer, Basketball and Baseball Teams and was President of the Glee Club (two years), President of Hi-Y (two years), member of the Student Council (three years) and member of the Yearbook staff.

Jim signed a contract with the Cleveland Indians following high school graduation and eventually graduated from Springfield College in 1954.

Upon graduation from college his deferment from the draft was immediately removed and he was drafted into the Army where he served two years in the Nike Division and was stationed in LaPlata, Maryland with responsibility for guarding the Washington, D.C. area.

Upon completion of military service Jim was employed at Allstate Insurance Company for thirteen years. When South Windsor began the first full time Recreation Program under the direction of Town Manager, Terry Sprenkel, Jim was hired as the Recreation Director, a position he held for twenty-seven years.

Prior to his Recreation Director duties he coached an American Legion Baseball Team with Porter Blinn.

Jim was inducted in the East Windsor Hall of Fame in 2003. Jim passed away in 2010 and he leaves his wife Priscilla a 2015 South Windsor Hall of Fame inductee, a daughter Karen and a son Bruce, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Joseph L. Wood, Ed. D.

SWPS Administrator

Dr. Wood has over forty years’ experience in Education including twenty years as the Superintendent of South Windsor Public Schools for the period 1986-2006.

Joe received a B.S. Degree in Foreign Language and a M.Ed. in Educational Administration from Boston State College. In 1973, he received his Ed.D. in Educational Administration at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Additional education includes Pembroke College - Oxford International Roundtable in Oxford, England, University of Southern California – Instructional Technology, University of Washington - EDEA Fellowship and University of Rochester – Advanced Seminar for Superintendents. Joe has Connecticut Certifications as a Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent and Teacher-Secondary French. His Massachusetts certifications include Superintendent, High School Principal, Assistant High School Principal and Teacher-Secondary French.

Joe began his career as a Teacher of Foreign Language and served as Chairman of the Foreign Language Department at Avon High School, Avon, Massachusetts. He served as principal at Monument Mountain Regional High School in Great Barrington, Massachusetts for seven years, Adjunct Professor in Education at Westfield State College and Superintendent of Schools for the Berkshire Hills Regional School District in Stockbridge, Massachusetts for nine years.

While Superintendent of Schools in South Windsor, Joe provided leadership and supervision for a school system of over 5,000 students, 600 professional staff, 150 support staff and a budget over $50M. He instituted strategic leadership and long-range planning and developed and negotiated a merit pay evaluation system for administrators. He supervised and coordinated a study of early childhood education and reorganized staff, administration and curricula to increase building level autonomy. He established advisory committees for parents and teachers and supervised and administered the development of educational specifications for extensive expansion and renovations of school buildings. Joe provided leadership and support for referenda resulting in over $53 million for school construction. He developed training programs for Board of Education members and instituted data warehousing to facilitate data-driven decision making to improve student learning. He led development and implementation of three strategic plans resulting in improved curricula, professional development and increased student learning. Joe established a capacity for systemic self-renewal through strategic leadership.

After he served as Superintendent in South Windsor, Joe was an Assistant Research Professor and Director of the Executive Leadership Program at the University Leadership and Teaching-University of Connecticut and since 2010 he provides educational consulting services for the New England School Development Council in Marlborough, Massachusetts.

Joe has served in various leadership roles on state and regional committees/organizations including the New England School Development Council, Connecticut Department of Education, Planning for Quality Integrated Education, Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents and Hartford Area Superintendent Association.

Joe has facilitated numerous presentations and been a featured speaker at Education conferences/conventions throughout the United States. He has also served on committees and commissions for the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. He also has several publication contributions.

Joe is a recipient of Emeritus membership in the Connecticut Association of School Superintendents, Recipient of the Cooperative Leadership Award of the National School Development Council, and recipient of Connecticut Association of School Superintendents Presidential Award.

1993 Boys State Champion Baseball Team


Coached by Phil Harak (Head Coach) and John Vitello, Larry Bojarski and Craig Zimmerman. After going to the State Semifinals in 1992, the team compiled a 18-4 record, second place in the Central Connecticut Conference Eastern Division, first place in Class L, third place in the State Final Poll. The team had a first round bye and then beat Foran High School, New Canaan High School and Wethersfield High School.

In the championship game for the first time, the team beat Plainville High School in extra innings.

1969-1970 Boys' State Champion Basketball Team


Coached by South Windsor High School Hall of Fame member Charlie Sharos along with Coach Robert Labreche, also a member of the Hall of Fame, the 1970 State Championship was the first at South Windsor High School. Legendary Coach and South Windsor High School Hall of Fame member Hugh Greer won five State Titles from 1939-1945 at Ellsworth Memorial High School, prior to the opening of South Windsor High School in 1962.

The team was lead by 6’9” junior Tom Roy with playmaker junior Terry Stoddard, defensive Ace junior John “Duke” Mason and long range sharpshooter senior John Bossi.

On the way to the State Title Game the team beat St. Thomas Aquinas in a close game with Roy, Stoddard and Mason on the bench having fouled out. Bossi and reserves made key shots to win the game and advance. The next game was against Middletown High School where Tom Roy scored 60 points, more than the combined total points scored by the Middletown team. The team then beat Daniel Hand High School for the State Championship at Central Connecticut State University. The team finished with a 22-2 record.
